At the turn of the 2000s, Schalke 04 was one of the most exciting and heartbreaking clubs in German football. The Meisterschaftsdrama of 2001 was still fresh in everyone's minds — that crazy night when the Königsblau thought they had the title for a few minutes before Bayern snatched it from them at the last gasp. The 2001-02 season was therefore one of mental reconstruction, of bouncing back, with a group that wanted to prove that it wasn't just an accident. The Arena AufSchalke, inaugurated in August 2001, gave the club a new cathedral to inhabit — and this jersey was one of the very first to be worn there.
